Experiment: day 1

I have decided to conduct a little experiment. I really have never kept track of what I eat. I always try to eat healthy and I think I do a good job…but it occurred to me that perhaps I should actually keep track of my calories for a few days and see how many I truly eat.l So for one week, and one week only, I am going to blog everything I eat and keep track of calories. This will be difficult for me since I have never done it before. So this is day one of the experiment.

Before I start I have a few reminders, I am not trying to gain or lose weight at all. I will not change anything I would normally eat for this, I am not perfect, I eat junk food and cookies on occasion, and I’m not afraid to post it! Also my appetite changes very much from day to day so some days may seem more dense then others. Also., I don’t have a scale or anything and I’m not going to get extremely particular so all calorie estimates are approximate (but close.)

So here’s today’s scoop, brekkie first (They called it brekkie when I was in New Zealand and I though it was so cute I adopted it)

1.5 cups of Kashi cinnamon harvest cereal, 1 cup 1% milk, and a UFO peach (about 1 day from going bad) total kcals: 422

Lunch: As I’ve mention before, I don’t usually sit down to a lunch, I kind of snack a lot around the lunch hour. Everything pictured here was eaten at separate times, but here is everything I packed for today:

A StarKist tuna lunch to go, yogurt, Kashi TLC bar, in the baggie are Kashi crackers and 1/3 cup of trail mix (jeez I ate a lot of Kashi products today) and an apple that I never got around to. kcals: 800 (that sounds like a lot, but this was lunch plus a few snacks)

And for dinner I tired something new, Tempeh:

since this was my first time working with this, I just followed the directions on the back to get the basic flavor down. The directions where to saute in a bit of soy sauce and olive oil. Then I added it to this salad:

I’m gong to be really honest with you guys on this blog when I try a new product, and the honest truth here? I don’t like tempeh. Perhaps it was how I cooked it or something but it tasted almost…rotten or something. I ate 2 of the four pieces and then ate around the last 2. The rest of the salad was spinach leaves, cabbage, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes from my garden, almonds and poppy seed dressing.

I don’t like low fat dressing. And I will tell you all something that will make you not like it either. Studies have shown that low fat salad dressings eaten with salad greens can inhibit the amount of nutrients your body absorbs form the vegetables (I just wrote veggie tables and had to correct it, what the heck?). I’m not making this up we actually studied this last semester in Physiology. Plus low fat salad dressing tastes as bad as…well…low fat salad dressing. So use the good stuff and use it sparingly. kcals: about 430 (didn’t measure all the veggies so this is approx).

Total for the day: 1652. That’s about where I expected it to fall although this was a pretty healthy day for me, I usually get 1 treat in there somewhere :)

Reminder: I am going to Dave Matthews Band concert tomorrow (woop woop) out of town and I’m not sure I will have time to post, if I don’t though I will be sure to give you all a recap on Wednesday.

Weird update: Have you every suddenly realized that you have cut yourself but you didn’t feel anything or notice until there is a puddle of blood on the floor? I wrapped up writing this post and when I hit publish I looked down and there was blood all over my keyboard, apparently coming from 2 small round puncture wounds, one on my finger and one on my palm. How in the world does one get such a cut without realizing? We aren’t talking a paper cut here, these are deep stab wounds. So weird!!!

  • I thought the same when I first tried tempeh and I made it the same way. I haven’t tried it again but you should try tempeh bacon, its definatly a winner.

  • I know what you mean about your appetite changing all the time. The past few days I ate really light but today I had bigger meals.

And I’ve also heard that you need some fat in your dressing to absorb the nutrients from your salad, but I was surprised when I learned it.

And thanks so, so much for adding me to your blogroll.

I’m not sure if you saw my comment on your Fresh Face post, but there’s some tips on how to manage the blogroll. But the way you have it is fine, so no worries!

Anyway, sorry for the very long comment.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Oh my goodness; are you okay?! Hopefully the cuts aren’t anything TOO serious!

If you’re a fan of really hearty salad dressings, I suggest you try my absolute favorite: Annie’s Organic Goddess Dressing. It seriously is to die for!! You won’t regret it–trust me!

PS: Veggie tables?! Too cute! I think I’ve made that mistake before, as well… :)

  • I like the experiment! :0)

Yes, I HAVE realized that before, about the cut, haha :0)

  • hey jess, to answer your question the other day, i did a cover of FHM in 2002 i was only 18 and had a MAJOR crush on him, so having a man that good looking so close for so long… i would consider that the highlight of my modeling career :-D

  • Natalie~
I’ll pick some up next time I go, thanks for the tip!

    Foodie~
I was suprised by that to! All the more reason to get the good stuff :)

    Erin~
Not serious at all, in fact I tried to take a picture but they didn’t even show up, it’s just weird how something can bleed so much and not even hurt! I hate to tell you this, but I have tried goddess dressing, and ended up throwing away the whole bottle. It tasted a bit like bacon to me (which I can’t stand) perhaps I got a bad bottle?

    Jenn~
Dang sexy girl! Thats a huge job! I would love to see pictures sometime if you want to share!
you can email them to modbehav@gmail.com

  • Hmm… I can see where the spices can make one think of (ick) bacon…
Did you try the organic version or just the regular? I’ve only tried the organic, so I couldn’t compare the two.
