To market, to market

Day started off to with a trip to the farmers market! We had some breakfast while we were there, we split a raspberry cheese Danish and a sausage breakfast burrito, here’s some pics (keep in mind this was quite early for us, we look pretty tired!)

We came home with a spaghetti squash, a giant zucchini, a giant summer squash, a large heirloom tomato, Yukon gold potatoes, and some pearl onions. Stay tuned for what we did with all of this!

It is game day here in Lincoln and the farmers market is held a few blocks from Husker stadium so there were people handing out random swag, we came back with 4 free T-shirts, 2 coozy (spelling?), and 3 golf towels which I have no idea what to do with since neither of us golf. You can see the T-shirts and coozies in the picture.

Then I had to work, boo. I got off work and headed to my appointment with Pauli, the personal trainer at my new gym. And here is my official….

personal trainer review:

We started out talking about my personal fitness goals and my history of working out. After that we headed out to the weight room and he put me through an INTENSE workout focusing on my arms and abs. I wish I knew the names of the machines and exercises I did, I’ll try to find out so I can give you guys specific exercises I do, I’ll try to describe it the best I can.

What I did (3 sets of each):

  • 10 biceps curls with 10 lb free weights
  • 15 tricep pull downs on a free motion machine
  • 10 on this machine that you get on your knees and then pull yourself up with your arms, works your triceps and shoulders (sorry I don’t know the name)
  • 12 pulling up and out on the free motion machine, working triceps
  • “speed crunches” in which he had me do as many situps as I could in 60 seconds, I did 40 the first rep, 38 the second, and 37 the third
  • something for my oblique’s, can’t explain it, sort of a sideways sit up on a suspended bench??????
  • and superman exercises on a ball, my lower back is a little weak

What I learned:

  • my percent body fat is 15.5%
  • my lower back is fairly weak
  • my balance sucks
  • my arms are a little stronger then I though

Pros:

  • He showed me how to use many of the machines in the weight room that I would otherwise probably not go near
  • He showed me all around the gym
  • I found out my body fat percent which is something I have wanted to do for a while
  • I got a great arm workout and felt what it was like to “max out” I knew what this was but never really experienced it before

Cons:

  • My free hour with a personal trainer turned into a 40 minute workout and an hour long sales pitch. Don’t get me wrong I completely understand that this is there job and livelihood, but this guy was INCREDIBLY pushy and I felt like he was telling me I wouldn’t make it on my own which I really resented.
  • He asked me what celebrity I want to look like. I told him I don’t want to look like any, I want to look like me, just with more muscle definition and strength. He INSISTED I pick a celebrity so I said that I really like Madonna’s arms, he then went ON AND ON about how if I stick with him I will look just like Madonna in a year…I think he needs a new angle :(

All in all a great experience and I learned a lot!

Tonight’s AMAZING dinner!

This is one of my specialties

DSCN0931

We cooked up the spaghetti squash in the oven at 415 degrees, meanwhile creating this amazing sauce

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 can fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1/2 giant zucchini from farmers market
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 a yellow onion
  • 3 cloves of minced garlic
  • 6 oz dry red wine, like Merlot
  • red pepper flakes to taste

Heat onions and garlic in a hot pan until soft. Add Zucchini and let soften. In a separate pan brown Turkey with red pepper flakes. Add turkey to zucchini and onions. Add fire toasted tomatoes and tomato paste and heat through. Add wine and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. The long simmer time is the key, it makes it extremely thick and flavorful, and the wine flavor comes out strongly. Serve with garlic bread and enjoy!

The plan for tonight was to go to my friends power hour, but we are exhausted from getting up so early and it’s pouring outside so I think we are going to stay in instead. Hope everyone’s weekend is going great! Enjoy your Sunday, and I’ll “see” you tomorrow!

  • Don’t you just love free stuff?!

    Your dinner looks yummy!

Glad your training session went somewhat well, but too bad about the sales pitch.

  • I LOVE farmers’ markets!! So fun that you came home with not only great produce, but some other goodies as well!

Eek, the cons of your training session sound pretty major :-( But I’m glad it was a good experience for you! If you don’t mind me asking: have you scheduled another session with him?

Spaghetti squash dinner = divine. Come cook for me, please?? :-D

  • thanks foodie!

at 45 bucks an hour there is no way I could afford to schedule another session with him. I do think it would be beneficial to have a trainer, but at this point it’s not fiscally reasonable, plus if I was going to get one I would probably not go back to him

  • i really dont like big gym trainers.

its not their fault (excpect for picking that part of the industry) because they work 100% on commission, so they, in as nice a way as possible, try and make you feel like you will fail without them.

I love my studio because we either push people away if we dont feel they are motivated, and once they do start training with us, we immediately start TEACHING them so they can transition out and do it on their own for the rest of their life.

Big gym trainers give personal trainers a bad name.

  • Um, you pretty much nailed one of my all-time favorite meals! Rock on!

  • your dinner looks delicious!!! yum! the personal trainner guy sounds strange! he is definitely in need of a new approach…it’s good to hear that you did get some good things out of the appt! i hope your having a relaxing sunday!

  • it was really interesting to read about your personal trainer experience! I guess the point of it was to get a professional to work you out, but that is kinda annoying he was so hung up on looking like a celebrity :P

and i can’t believe i’m the first one to say this: 15.5% body fat sounds super fit to me!! i forget the exact ranges but I think that’s around athlete territory – awesome!

    spaghetti squash = yummmm :D

  • GF~
I would totally hire you if you lived near me!

    MWS~
I would love to say that I worked my butt off to achieve that 15.5%, but honestly I probably owe it more to my parents, I have always just been naturally thin, thanks mom and dad :)

  • wow what a yummy looking dinner!

and ive got to say, you and your boyfriend make such a cute couple :D
